INTRA- ACP MOBILITY PROJECT WAS A KEY TO ESTABLISHING MY CAREER

The Boeing 737-800 Aircraft touched down at Kamuzu International Airport at about 12.30 pm on the 13th of June 2014. The plane’s door opened and, for the first time, I walked out to step on Malawi soil. I had just arrived from Kenya to pursue an MSc in Aquaculture at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), thanks to INTRA- ACP Mobility Project that awarded me the scholarship to pursue the course. My MSc study at LUANAR under INTRA- ACP Mobility has greatly reshaped and opened another world to my career.

My research project, entitled “Effect of dietary spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) supplements on growth and immunity of Oreochromis shiranus challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila”, was partly sponsored by FAPA (RUFORUM). The research has equipped me with wealth of experience that will successfully contribute to the expansion of aquaculture within and outside Kenya. I have developed an incredible network of friends, peers, and professional contacts during my time in Malawi. I have gained thorough training in conducting studies and literature searches using database analyzing and summarizing data. I have gained experience in feed processing and storage, removal of antinutrients in fish feed ingredients, fish feed formulation techniques and proximate analysis of nutrients in fish tissue and feed ingredients. Moreover, my project research exposed me to the analysis of growth models and feeding experiment protocols in fish. I am also well versed in sterile microbiological techniques, DNA and RNA extraction, spectrophotometry, use of a haemocytometer, microscopic investigation, aseptic technique and bacterial isolation and cultivation.
